We discovered Lindsay’s blog a few years ago, with the lovely silk Belladone she wore for her wedding.

She has sewn other Deer&Doe patterns since: another silk Belladone, a rayon Mélilot shirt, a pair of Safran jeans… Today she’s telling us more about the Bruyère shirt she made out of double gauze, perfect for the first days of autumn!

For those who don’t know you, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I live in Austin, TX with my husband and three cats. I’m currently a full-time grad student and part-time sewing instructor, and I’ve been blogging about sewing for the last three years. My other hobbies include trying to keep plants alive, taking way too many pictures of my cats, cooking vegan meals, reading long novels, and watching British quiz shows.

What is your creative process like when you start a new sewing project?

I like planning almost as much as I like sewing! I make a list organized by garment type at the start of every season, although I don’t always stick to it very well. I usually have specific patterns in mind, and I try to sew from my small fabric stash before I buy any new fabric.

Let’s talk more about your Bruyère shirt: why did you choose this pattern? What are the details that caught your eye?

I loved this pattern the instant I saw it! I had been wanting a more feminine button-down shirt with waist definition and this fit the bill perfectly. The combination of the pleats with the curved hem is really gorgeous and sets this pattern apart.

What kind of fabric did you use and why?

I used a very soft and cozy double gauze (that was very difficult and shifty to sew with!). It might have been a bit too thick for this pattern – I remember the button placket being particularly tricky to sew – but I love the end result!

Have you made any modifications?

I graded up a size at the waist, but other than that I made it as instructed.

For what occasions have you worn this shirt?

I love wearing this shirt with leggings and flats or boots in the fall. It’s casual, but still looks put together, so I feel comfortable wearing it to school or work as well as out on the weekends.

What is the next Deer&Doe pattern you are planning to sew?

I recently sewed my first Melilot shirt and I have two more versions planned – one in a linen/silk blend and one in crepe-backed satin. As with the Bruyere, I love how the Melilot is a more feminine take on the classic button-down. The shape is really flattering, but still comfortable, and it goes with everything!
